Psalm 76: Fulfilled During the End Times?

I wrote an article about how the Book of Psalms is one of the Bible prophecy-rich books in the entire Bible. Psalm 76 is a good example of how end time prophecy information can be found in the Book of Psalms. I will explain why I believe Psalm 76 is a chapter that has end time relevance in this article.

Psalm 76 Overview

Psalm 76 praises the Lord after He defeated a large number of enemy troops. Psalm 76:1-6 covers how the Lord defeated “the chariot and horse” and broke “the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle” in Jerusalem (Salem):

“(1) In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel. (2) In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion. (3) There brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah. (4) Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey. (5) The stouthearted are spoiled, they have slept their sleep: and none of the men of might have found their hands. (6) At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.” (Psalm 76:1-6)

Up to this point, Psalm 76 shows potential to be an end time passage since the Lord will arise during the end times to defeat the nations that will come against Jerusalem (Zechariah 12, Zechariah 14, Isaiah 29, Joel 3, etc.). However, some see this passage referring to the Lord destroying Sennacherib’s army. The following verses should make it clear that Psalm 76 is a chapter relevant to the end times.

Psalm 76:7-11 speaks of how the Lord arose to render judgment, how the Lord went to save all the meek of the earth, and how people should fear the Lord. The passage also indicates that the Lord was angry when He rendered judgment:

“(7) Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry? (8) Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still, (9) When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah. (10) Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain. (11) Vow, and pay unto the LORD your God: let all that be round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.” (Psalm 76:7-11)

The details found in Psalm 76:7-11, particularly about how the Lord arose to judge and save all the meek of the earth, connect this passage with several end time-related passages. The following table presents Psalm 76:7-9 and some of these end time-related passages, and the similarities between these passages are highlighted:

(17) For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke. (18) According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence. (19) So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. (20) And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.
Isaiah 61:1-3: (1) The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; (2) To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; (3) To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
Isaiah 63:1-6: (1) Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. (2) Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? (3) I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. (4) For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. (5) And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. (6) And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.

Verse 12 ends with a statement that the Lord will be terrible to the kings of the earth.

“He shall cut off the spirit of princes: he is terrible to the kings of the earth.” (Psalm 76:12)

This verse further solidifies that Psalm 76 is an end time chapter since the Lord will punish the kings of the earth during the end times, particularly during the final battle of the war of Armageddon:

Isaiah 24:21-22: (21) And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. (22) And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
Revelation 19:18-21: (18) That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. (19) And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. (20) And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. (21) And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

At the minimum, Psalm 76 is likely a chapter that relates to the end time siege of Jerusalem, particularly the defeat of the nations that will besiege the city. Psalm 76:1-6 is a passage that fits well with other Bible prophecy passages about the end time siege of Jerusalem. Zechariah 14:12-13, 15: (12) And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. (13) And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour… (15) And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague.
Isaiah 29:5-7: (5) Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly. (6) Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire. (7) And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.
