Psalm 76: Fulfilled During the End Times?

I wrote an article about how the Book of Psalms is one of the Bible prophecy-rich books in the entire Bible. Psalm 76 is a good example of how end time prophecy information can be found in the Book of Psalms. I will explain why I believe Psalm 76 is a chapter that has end time relevance in this article.

Psalm 76 Overview

Psalm 76 praises the Lord after He defeated a large number of enemy troops. Psalm 76:1-6 covers how the Lord defeated “the chariot and horse” and broke “the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle” in Jerusalem (Salem):

“(1) In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel. (2) In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion. (3) There brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah. (4) Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey. (5) The stouthearted are spoiled, they have slept their sleep: and none of the men of might have found their hands. (6) At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.” (Psalm 76:1-6)

Up to this point, Psalm 76 shows potential to be an end time passage since the Lord will arise during the end times to defeat the nations that will come against Jerusalem (Zechariah 12, Zechariah 14, Isaiah 29, Joel 3, etc.). However, some see this passage referring to the Lord destroying Sennacherib’s army. The following verses should make it clear that Psalm 76 is a chapter relevant to the end times.

Psalm 76:7-11 speaks of how the Lord arose to render judgment, how the Lord went to save all the meek of the earth, and how people should fear the Lord. The passage also indicates that the Lord was angry when He rendered judgment:

“(7) Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry? (8) Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still, (9) When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah. (10) Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain. (11) Vow, and pay unto the LORD your God: let all that be round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.” (Psalm 76:7-11)

The details found in Psalm 76:7-11, particularly about how the Lord arose to judge and save all the meek of the earth, connect this passage with several end time-related passages. The following table presents Psalm 76:7-9 and some of these end time-related passages, and the similarities between these passages are highlighted:

The People Should Fear the Lord The Lord Will Arise to Judge The Lord Will Save the Meek The Timeframe When the Events Described Will Take Place
Psalm 76:7-9: (7) Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry? (8) Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still, (9) When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah.
Isaiah 59:15-20: (15) Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment. (16) And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him. (17) For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke. (18) According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence. (19) So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. (20) And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.
Isaiah 61:1-3: (1) The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; (2) To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; (3) To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
Isaiah 63:1-6: (1) Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. (2) Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? (3) I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. (4) For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. (5) And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. (6) And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.

Verse 12 ends with a statement that the Lord will be terrible to the kings of the earth.

“He shall cut off the spirit of princes: he is terrible to the kings of the earth.” (Psalm 76:12)

This verse further solidifies that Psalm 76 is an end time chapter since the Lord will punish the kings of the earth during the end times, particularly during the final battle of the war of Armageddon:

Kings of the Earth The Lord Will Attack
Psalm 76:12: He shall cut off the spirit of princes: he is terrible to the kings of the earth.
Isaiah 24:21-22: (21) And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. (22) And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
Revelation 19:18-21: (18) That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. (19) And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. (20) And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. (21) And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

At the minimum, Psalm 76 is likely a chapter that relates to the end time siege of Jerusalem, particularly the defeat of the nations that will besiege the city. Psalm 76:1-6 is a passage that fits well with other Bible prophecy passages about the end time siege of Jerusalem. The following table illustrates how well Psalm 76:1-6 fits with other Bible prophecy passages about the Lord punishing Jerusalem’s attackers.

Attackers Defeated Jerusalem Horses
Psalm 76:1-6: (1) In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel. (2) In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion (3) There break he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah. (4) Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey. (5) The stouthearted are spoiled, they have slept their sleep: and none of the men of might have found their hands. (6) At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.
Zechariah 12:3-4: (3) And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. (4) In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.
Zechariah 14:12-13, 15: (12) And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. (13) And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour… (15) And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague.
Isaiah 29:5-7: (5) Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly. (6) Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire. (7) And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress hershall be as a dream of a night vision.

  1. It is a good start that you are exploring bible prophecy. Gog ‘s army will be destroyed by the Lord in Zion and also in Jerusalem after 5 months that they came to destroy Babylon the great (aka america) Jer 50 & 51. There will be 10% of population that the Lord will protect and will be exodus out of Babylon in the mid of nuclear fire and radiation. While living in the wilderness Zion, magog/Russian and Arab hordes will surround them but they will be destroyed by (Ez. 39).

  2. It really would not be in the best interest of your blog for me to tell you all on this forum, but let us say that Hitler’s SS could have taken lessons.

    • You are right that the Gog and Magog of Ezekiel 38 is also the Gog and Magog of Rev. 20. Ezekiel 39 is the armageddon war.

You may want to check out also Rev. 9:13-21, it fits with Rev. 20. The 200 million MAN (deceived nation) army riding on horse-like beasts/locusts. There NUMBER is like the sand in the seashore. John heard their NUMBER. Imagine from a vantage point, 200 million on the horizon, it would look like sands on the seashore.

  3. I admit that I lack knowledge on this subject. What is the significance of a Jesuit Pope? I read that Jesuits are not supposed to seek such high office, but that’s all I know.

  4. Possibly so. Maybe the fire sent from God in Ezekiel 39:6 is the same fire of Revelation 20:9 that devours the insurgents. That is an interesting take, and one that I have never considered. Bible prophecies often seems to refer to more than one event, so that makes sense.

  5. I think it is more of interest that he is a Jesuit. I believe the black pope was always the power behind the throne, but now they have taken the throne out in the open in plain view. Must mean something.

  6. I was surprised that they chose him and surprised they selected someone who is his age. I thought they’d choose someone who is younger. I imagine people who believe in the Prophecy of the Popes are very anxious right now given this new one’s age. However, this selection makes me doubt the prophecy more.

  7. I don’t see why Ezekiel 39’s destruction would have to be figurative. There are some differences in the feast the birds are called to in Ezekiel 39 and the feast the birds are called to in Revelation 19. Also, Ezekiel 39 and Ezekiel 38 may not be referring to the same event… This is where Revelation 20 comes into play…

  8. Those are definitely interesting connections between the language of Psalm 76 and Ezekiel 39. If this Gog/Magog surge occurs before Armageddon, the destruction described in Ezekiel 38 and 39 would have to be figurative.

    Hmmm….

  9. The respected Jack Kelly recently wrote http://raptureready.com/featured/kelley/jack267.html

“There’s an interesting footnote to Amos 7, but
you have to read Amos in the Septuagint (Greek)
translation to see it. Instead of verse 1 reading like
it does above, the Septuagint reads like this:

    Thus has the Lord
God showed me; and behold, a swarm of locusts coming
from the east; and behold, one caterpillar, king Gog. “

Where do we see the locusts in Revelation? At the 5th Trumpet, the 1st woe. If Gog is Russia, it is extremely easy to piece it all together.

Look at Daniel 7’s beast kingdoms from the sea: Lion w/ eagle wings,
then the bear, then the 4 headed leopard, then the 4th terrible beast with 10 horns.

We know from Revelation 13 that the last kingdom of Satan is ruled by Satan the dragon, has the body of the 4 headed leopard, has the mouth of the lion, and has the feet of the bear.

We know from Daniel 2 that the statue of Babylon (= Lucifer = Satan) is characterized by the head of gold, chest of silver, belly of brass, and the legs of iron with 10 toes.

John the revelator is describing the 7 headed, 10 horned beast (Daniel’s statue of Satan) as both “standing up”/ coexistent and also as successive/ through time; combining both Daniel 2 with Daniel 7.

The combination would look like this graph: http://prophecyandritual.blogspot.com/2013/03/the-abomination-of-desolation-statue-of.html

(7 heads, 10 horns, 7 crowns – where we are now)
Lion w/ eagle wings (UK controlling the US)
    Bear (Russia)
    4 headed Leopard (EU)
4th terrible beast with 10 toes (yet to be determined, possibly the Islamic caliphate 10 kingdom coalition)

    (7 heads, 10 horns, 8 crowns – the 2nd cycle/ 1st woe/ 5th trumpet 1st Gog attack at the end of the 1st cycle)
Bear is the head of gold ruler (Russia plucked the wings of the eagle/ US = Gog attacks “Israel” – dispensational Israel/ US. Now you see why this notion exists – to trick people into thinking the 1st attack of Gog is “the end of the world”, “better get with the false Christ”!)
    – unknown 1 head
    – unknown 4 head
    – 4th terrible beast with 10 toes (the US under martial law/ 10 FEMA states)

    (7 heads, 10 horns, 9 crowns – the 2nd woe/ 6th trumpet timeframe, start of the 3rd temple)
    -4 headed EU leopard rules
    -unknown 1 head
    -unknown 1 head
-4th terrible beast with 10 toes (most likely the UN 10 economic divisions)

(7 heads, 10 horns, 10 crowns – the 3rd woe/ Trumpet 7/ 7 bowls of wrath – the world belongs to the lord but there are 5 wise virgins and 5 foolish virgins. The last antichrist rules the Laodicean lukewarm church of the 5 foolish virgins.)
-4th terrible beast rules 10 horns, the 10 lost tribes of Israel (plus the 2 horned False prophet = 12 tribes of Israel ruled)
-body of the leopard/ 4 heads of EU
    – mouth of the lion UK
    – feet of the bear with 10 toes (Russia rules 10 kingdoms too, just like the last antichrist has 10 horns.)

As Jesus said, a house divided against itself cannot stand – Russia goes to war with the Zionist regime in Jerusalem (Jerusalem will be divided between 5 wise virgins and 5 foolish virgins who have the mark of the beast)- Zechariah 14:2’s “half the city will be exiled”. This is the 2nd (3rd?) Gog war, at the end of the 4th cycle, end of the 7th trumpet/ 7 bowls of wrath timeframe. The “millenium” is referring to being with the Lord (2 Peter 3:8’s “
that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

The Lord returns at the end of the 3rd cycle, end of the 6th Trumpet timeframe at Rosh Hashanah. The “millenium” is actually the 7th trumpet/ 7 bowls of wrath timeframe. The Lord is testing the Laodiceans/ 5 foolish virgins to see if they will repent under their life with the mark of the beast and last antichrist.

  10. So the old pope resigned under questionable excuses, a new pope is elected without hardly discussion and he’s the first Jesuit in the office. So now there are two Jesuit popes, him and the black pope. Something is certainly up.

  11. My current thinking is that Gog is the king of the north. My past articles do not indicate this as I have not openly shared this position that I’ve been moving towards as I continue my studies.

  12. I have no doubt that this Psalm has end-times significance, as well as significance regarding all of Israel’s enemies who were defeated throughout history.

As concerning Gog and his forces, I currently think that the Gog and Magog battle may be part of Armageddon simply because of the many similarities given between the two battles: great earthquakes; walls fell; mountains thrown down; great hail; fowls called to eat the flesh and blood of the slain. Perhaps the Gog and Magog battle is describing only the portion of Armageddon that concerns Gog and his multitude. I could change my opinion on this matter in the future.

Additionally, my current opinion of the word “Gog” is that
it means simply “one of the stock of Magog, son of Japheth”. I believe that a descendant of Magog will be the leader of all of these northern bands (along with Libya and Ethiopia) who unite together against Israel.

In another post, you indicated that the “king of the north”
would not be one of the ten kings of Antichrist. Might Gog be the king of the north who also comes against the Antichrist?
