I have considered Jerusalem, New York City, and Tyre as candidates to represent Babylon the Great. I was asked a while back whether I have considered the possibility of Babylon, Iraq representing Babylon the Great City. I have considered the possibility, and I will share some of my thoughts in this article.
Support for Babylon, Iraq
Babylon is a candidate that merits much consideration. Here are some of the reasons why I believe Babylon is a candidate that merits a lot of consideration:
The Name “Babylon” Appears
Babylon’s name appears in Revelation 17 and Revelation 18. The text does not say “Nineveh the Great” or “Tyre the Great” The text says “Babylon the Great”.
Unfulfilled Prophecies
I do not believe the prophecies concerning Babylon’s destruction like Isaiah 13, Jeremiah 50, etc. are completely fulfilled yet. The destruction of Babylon prophesied in these chapters and others suggest the city’s destruction will be so severe that no one will inhabit it ever again. The following passages indicate that Babylon’s destruction will be like the downfall of Sodom and Gomorrah:
“(19) And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’ excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. (20) It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there.” (Isaiah 13:19-20)
“(39) Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation. (40) As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.” (Jeremiah 50:39-40)
The remnants of Sodom and Gomorrah cannot be found. In contrast, the ruins of Babylon can still be found, and work is ongoing to preserve and restore Babylon in hopes of preserving its important cultural heritage and making it a site that Iraqis can exploit economically in the future. Much of the work is being done by the World Monument Fund’s Future of Babylon Project, which has received funding from a variety of sources, including the U.S. Government. Parallels Between Babylon & Babylon the Great’s Destruction
An important item that Babylon has in its favor is the parallel between the Old Testament’s description of the city and its destruction and the Book of Revelation’s description of Babylon the Great and its destruction. The following tables display examples of the closeness between the description of Babylon and its destruction in the Old Testament and the description of Babylon the Great and its destruction in the Book of Revelation.

| Revelation 18:21-23: (21) And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. (22) And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; (23) And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. |

The close parallel in several passages is something that should not be ignored. I believe the parallels make Babylon a strong candidate to consider.
Counterargument: Not Ready
The biggest issue those who believe Babylon, Iraq represents Babylon the Great have is that the city is not remotely close to ready to serve as the economic and political center of the world that Babylon the Great will be. The work to preserve and restore Babylon is heavily reliant on outside money to keep the project afloat. The Iraqi government does not have the money to invest into a rapid building of the city at the present time. Cities like New York City are much more ready to serve as Babylon the Great if the end times were to begin in the next few years.

I understand your line of reasoning. That potentially could be a point against Babylon, but it doesn’t eliminate Babylon from consideration because the detail in the Book of Revelation about killing prophets, saints, etc could relate to the future.
Babylon the great in the book of Revelation killed God’s prophets.The apostle were told to rejoice because of her destruction because she persecuted them also.Babylon in the old testament did not kill God’s prophets.God protected them while in Babylon.Also,who did Jesus say killed God’s prophets?

I wish this article could have been written quickly. It actually took two days to write. I published it yesterday afternoon so you might have missed it when you commented last night.
I may not agree with every idea, but I appreciate that you took the time to share your ideas.
I believe that America (New York City) will be the location of the Daughter of Babylon for many reasons (already outlined).
All the criteria can be found in Isaiah 13-14; Jeremiah 50-51, Rev. 17-18. Without going into a lot of detail, two things show me that Babylon the Great cannot be in future Iraq. First, during the previous war(s) there, much of the ammunition that was used against Iraq was depleted uranium making it unsafe for a very long time. Secondly, the Abrahamic Covenant includes Iraq, and if Iraq is totally destroyed, and never occupied again, how does Iraq go into the Millillium for we know the earth will be fully occupied? If Babylon, Iraq, is the one, then it would take many years to rebuild and to conform to the criteria in Jer. 50-51 and Rev. 18. I do believe that there will be a period of time (not known) between the Rapture and the beginning of the Tribulation. Would like some responses. Thanks

I’ve done a timeline of these events. It took me years to put together. I did it on a wall in my office. I think some of it will shed light on issue one and two.
The Antichrist comes to power by way of miracles that deceive even the very elect. He pretends to be all things to all people. The 12th Imam to Muslims. The Messiah to the Jews. The returned Christ to the Christians that don’t know Jesus. This is the mystery. He will reign in Babylon.
A peace is made with Israel.
The two prophets prophecy in Jerusalem. They shut up the heavens that it rain not causing a great drought. The waters of Babylon which is the Euphrates river is dried up. This is when the kings of the East head to Jerusalem.
Armageddon starts with the invasion of Israel from the North. They are stopped at Jerusalem by the two prophets. The two prophets are finally killed. Babylon celebrates and send each other gifts. Three days go by and the armies prepare a final battle killing off the remaining Jews. The two prophets who had been lying dead in the street the past three days stand up. A Voice from heaven is heard calling the two prophets to come to heaven and they go. A great earthquake happens and the mountains split apart. Water starts to come out from under the temple. The remaining Jews see their chance to flee and run through this gap to get away from the armies of Gog. On the other side they find a man standing on the mount of olives saying come this way. When they get to him the armies of Gog are destroyed. They give a sigh of relief and then see wounds in the hands and feet of the man. They ask him what they are from. He tells them that they are the wounds he received in the house of his friends. The Jews are converted to Christ. Christ stays long enough to see that the remaining Jews are safe.
The armies of Gog that are left are upset due to their great loss. They turn on the Antichrist. The trap that was set for the Jews is now upon Babylon as the remaining armies destroy Babylon, home of the Antichrist. After the armies destroy Babylon and are still in the city, God destroys Babylon with great violence. Zion starts to be built in America and the Jews in Jerusalem which are now Christians start to rebuild the temple. Now that the Jews believe in Christ the sons of Levi can make an offering to the Lord that is accepted. Some of them that followed the Antichrist seeking revenge go into a temple and kill the Prophet and temple president. The heavens go silent for the space of half an hour. There is great chaos in the world. Those unwilling to kill to survive must flee to Zion or Jerusalem. Some bad people gather together armies but are afraid to go against Zion or Jerusalem. The city of Enoch returns with Christ and all the holy angels. The Gospel grows eventually covering the whole earth and there is a thousand years of peace.
