Do Prophecies About Nineveh Have End Times Application?

I do not see many people talk about the Book of Nahum and the prophecies of Nineveh when it concerns their relevance to Bible prophecy. My old NIV Bible said that the prophecies of the Book of Nahum were already fulfilled with the destruction of Nineveh back in 612 B.C. I do not believe we can dismiss the notion that the prophecies concerning Nahum and Nineveh may have end time relevance, and I will explain why in this article.

I question whether the prophecies of Nahum and Nineveh have been completely fulfilled when I read Zephaniah 2:13-15 since Zephaniah 2 concerns the Day of the Lord, which is a period that will begin during the end times:

“(1) Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired; (2) Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’S anger come upon you…(13) And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness. (14) And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds: for he shall uncover the cedar work. (15) This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.” (Zephaniah 2:1-2, 13-15)

Another consideration is that the site of the ruins of ancient Nineveh is a part of the Mosul metropolitan area. Perhaps the prophecies of the Book of Nahum have an application to the past and an application to the future as well. Perhaps some of the prophecies concerning Nineveh refer to the destruction of Mosul, Iraq during the Day of the Lord

  1. I tend to agree with your assessment regarding Nineveh (Mosul). In watching John Haller’s Prophecy Update “Under Attack” he states exactly what you’re saying regarding end times prophecy fulfillment for this city towards the end of his video assessment. And definitely ‘no’ to one of the above comments Thy Nineveh might be America. That is bad biblical exegesis.
