The Chronology of the Book of Revelation Video Transcript
Revelation’s chronology is not like a typical story we read. Chapters 1 to 22 do not follow a strict chronology. There are sections that follow a straight-forward progression.
For instance, Revelation 6 covers the beginning to the end of the Tribulation:
"(1) And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. [...] (15) And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; (16) And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: (17) For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?" (Revelation 6:1, 15-17)
But chapter 12 backtracks to cover Satan’s longstanding hatred of the people of Israel:
"(1) And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: (2) And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. (3) And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. (4) And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. (5) And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. (6) And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days." (Revelation 12:1-6)
The back-and-forth nature of Revelation is consistent with what we see in other prophetic books like Isaiah and Daniel.
Understanding the back-and-forth nature of Revelation will help you immensely in your learning if you’re new to the book.
