Jeremiah 25:15-38: Fulfilled in the End Times?

Many of you are probably wondering if Jeremiah 25 relates to the end times. Some details in the chapter seem to fit well with what will happen in the end times.

Jeremiah 25 interested me when I started to study Bible prophecy as a teenager. I suspected that its events may occur in the end times despite many people claiming otherwise.

After much research, I will share with you my findings on Jeremiah 25 in this article. I will answer whether the events of Jeremiah 25 will occur during the end times.

Jeremiah 25:15-17

Before we begin, I want to let you know that we will focus on Jeremiah 25:15-38 in this article. The reason is that the events of Jeremiah 25:1-14 have already occurred. Jeremiah 25:15 onward may have details that relate to the end times.

The passage begins with the Lord telling Jeremiah that He has a cup of fury for the nations to drink. Those who drink from this wine cup will receive punishment:

“(15) For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. (16) And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them. (17) Then took I the cup at the LORD’S hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me:” (Jeremiah 25:15-17)

Jeremiah 25:18-26

Jeremiah 25:18-26 contains a long list of nations and kings who will “drink” from the wine cup of the Lord’s fury. Several of the nations listed in Jeremiah 25:18-26 also appear in end time sections of the Bible like Zephaniah 2:

“(17) Then took I the cup at the LORD’S hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me: (18) To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day; (19) Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people; (20) And all the mingled people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod, (21) Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon, (22) And all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon, and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea, (23) Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the utmost corners, (24) And all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mingled people that dwell in the desert, (25) And all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes, (26) And all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them.” (Jeremiah 25:17-26)

The key verse is Jeremiah 25:26. The verses says that every kingdom on the earth shall drink from the cup of the Lord’s fury.

As you will see shortly, the Day of the Lord is when the nations shall drink from the cup of the Lord’s fury.

Jeremiah 25:27

Jeremiah 25:27 suggests that those who drink the wine of the Lord’s fury will be brought down:

“Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.” (Jeremiah 25:27)

Isaiah 63:6, an end time verse, echos this thought:

“(4) For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. (5) And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. (6) And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.” (Isaiah 63:4-6)

Jeremiah 25:28

The Lord assures that the nations of the earth will drink from His cup in Jeremiah 25:28:

“And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.” (Jeremiah 25:28)

This promise also appears in Obadiah 1:16, a verse that relates to the Day of the Lord:

“(15) For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head. (16) For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.” (Obadiah 1:15-16)

Jeremiah 25:29

The Lord says He will begin to bring evil on the city which is called by His name, Jerusalem (see Daniel 9:16-18), and states that “all the inhabitants of the earth” will eventually be punished:

“For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.” (Jeremiah 25:29)

Jeremiah 25:15-38 was recorded before Babylon’s final invasion of the Jerusalem so it’s possible that verse 29 could refer to that event.

However, Jeremiah 25:15-38 mentions many details that appear in end time verses. Indeed, several end time verses suggest that verse 29 likely refers to the end times.

Jeremiah 25 & Joel 2

The first important passage is Joel 2:9-11 which concerns an end time siege of Jerusalem prior to the start of the Day of the Lord:

  • See Joel 2:1 and 3:2 for evidence that the siege described in Joel is prior to the start of the Day of the Lord.

For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.” (Jeremiah 25:29)

“(9) They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief. (10) The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: (11) And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?” (Joel 2:9-11)

Jeremiah 25 & Ezekiel 7

Ezekiel 7 is another prophecy about the end time siege of Jerusalem prior to the start of the Day of the Lord (“the day of trouble is near”). Verse 5 depicts the invasion force as “evil”, which is the term used in Jeremiah 25:29:

For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.” (Jeremiah 25:29)

“(5) Thus saith the Lord GOD; An evil, an only evil, behold, is come. (6) An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come. (7) The morning is come unto thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble is near, and not the sounding again of the mountains. (8) Now will I shortly pour out my fury upon thee, and accomplish mine anger upon thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense thee for all thine abominations. (9) And mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: I will recompense thee according to thy ways and thine abominations that are in the midst of thee; and ye shall know that I am the LORD that smiteth.” (Ezekiel 7:5-9)

Jeremiah 25, Isaiah 51 & Zechariah 12

Isaiah 51:17-23 is about Jerusalem recovering from drinking the cup of the Lord’s fury, which Jeremiah 25:17-18, 29 prophesies that the city will consume:

  • Both passages also suggest that the nations will drink from the cup of the Lord’s fury after Jerusalem drinks the cup.
  • Isaiah 51:22 suggests the passages’ fulfillment will be in the future since the Lord promises that Jerusalem will never drink from the cup of His fury again.

“(17) Then took I the cup at the LORD’S hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me: (18) To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day; […] (29) For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.” (Jeremiah 25:17-18, 29)

“(17) Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out. […] (19) These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee? (20) Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the LORD, the rebuke of thy God. […] (22) Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again: (23) But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.” (Isaiah 51:17, 19-20, 22-23)

We can further show that Isaiah 51:17-23 (and Jeremiah 25:29) is in the future by comparing the passage with Zechariah 12:1-3, a another end time prophecy passage:

  • Isaiah 51:22 refers to the cup that Jerusalem drank from as the “cup of trembling”.
  • Isaiah 51:23 suggests that Jerusalem’s attackers will also drink from the cup of trembling.
  • Zechariah 12:2 states that the Lord will make Jerusalem a “cup of trembling” to those nations who surround and attack the city.

“(17) Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out. […] (22) Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again: (23) But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.” (Isaiah 51:17, 22-23)

“(1) The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him. (2) Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. (3) And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.” (Zechariah 12:1-3)

Jeremiah 25:29, Isaiah 51, Joel 3

Finally, we can further show that Isaiah 51:17-23 (and Jeremiah 25:29) will occur in the future by comparing Isaiah 51:22 with Joel 3:2:

  • Joel 3:2 states that the Lord will plead for His people when He gathers the nations in the valley of Jehoshaphat (nearby Jerusalem) before the Day of the Lord (Joel 3:12-14).
  • Isaiah 51:22 describes the Lord as God who pleads for His people when He will make the nations drink from His cup of fury.

“(2) I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land. […] (12) Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about. (13) Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. (14) Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.” (Joel 3:2, 12-14)

Jeremiah 25:30-32

Jeremiah 25:30-32 focuses on the Lord’s punishment of the nations. The Lord will plead with all flesh, and will raise a whirlwind:

“(30) Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. (31) A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD. (32) Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.” (Jeremiah 25:30-32)

Joel 3:2 parallels Jeremiah 25:31 since both verses state that the Lord will plead with the nations:

“A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD.” (Jeremiah 25:31)

I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.” (Joel 3:2)

Jeremiah 30:23-24 and Jeremiah 23:19-20 are both end time passages. Each mentions that the Lord will raise a whirlwind to punish the wicked:

“Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.” (Jeremiah 25:32)

“(23) Behold, the whirlwind of the LORD goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked. (24) The fierce anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have done it, and until he have performed the intents of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it.” (Jeremiah 30:23-24)

“(19) Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. (20) The anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.” (Jeremiah 23:19-20)

Isaiah 66:15-16 is part of another end time passage. Isaiah 66:15-16 mirrors Jeremiah 25:31-32 by declaring that the Lord will plead with all flesh and stir up a whirlwind:

“(31) A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD.  (32) Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.” (Jeremiah 25:31-32)

“(15) For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. (16) For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.” (Isaiah 66:15-16)

Jeremiah 25:33

Jeremiah 25:33 tells us that there will be a great slaughter worldwide:

“And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.” (Jeremiah 25:33)

Both Jeremiah 25:33 and Isaiah 66:16, an end time verse, mention a great slaughter.

And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.” (Jeremiah 25:33)

“(2) For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter. (3) Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcases, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood. […] (8) For it is the day of the LORD’S vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion.” (Isaiah 34:2-3, 8)

Conclusion

This article proved that Jeremiah 25 is a chapter that relates to the end times. Jeremiah 25:15 onward is a prophecy about a future invasion (siege) of Jerusalem before the Day of the Lord and then the slaughter of the nations of the earth during the Day of the Lord.

  • The passage depicts the slaughter of nations by them drinking from the wine cup of the Lord’s fury.

  1. Jer 25:15-38 is an expansion of Zechariah 14:2 where “CHRIST HIMSELF” will gather all “NATIONS” to battle at Jerusalem for that prophesied, “GIGANTIC WAR” (#WW3) which will usher in the Daniel 2:33-34; 44-45 (the soon-coming Kingdom of God on the earth) in fulfillment of Acts 1:6 and a whole host of Scriptural references from the minor to major prophets…

What will follow this tectonic decimation based on Rev 9:14-16 will be the fulfillment of Dan 11:45 and the emergence of Dan. 12:1 where we will see the fulfillment of Rev 13:16-17 as the remaining wicked basterds on the earth (the “ONE-THIRD”) who did not perish in the “GIGANTIC WAR” amalgamate to form the “MARK OF THE BEAST CRISIS” (where SATAN* will appear as YESHUA* to deceive those who are left (for if it were possible then, even the very “ELECT” (144,000 + the GREAT MULTITUDE) of the saved would be deceived!!!

CHRIST returns to destroy the last bastion of the “MOST WICKED” on the earth with the brightness of His coming and here we will witness “THE SUPPER OF THE GREAT GOD” (where the “VULTURES” of heaven) will finally eat the carcasses of men based on Rev 19:17-21!!!

It is not a mystery – for Zechariah 13:8 tells that out of the 8+BILLION souls on earth: “It will happen in all the land, says the LORD, that two-thirds of the people in it will be cut off and die, but “ONE-THIRD” will be left in it (OR WILL BE SAVED)…”

    What say ye?

  2. Hi Wayne, I was reading Jeremiah as part of my daily study and Chapter 25 verses 30-33 struck me immediately as pertaining to end times. I wanted my thought validated so I went to the internet and came upon your web site. Thank you for confirming what I sensed by backing it up with comparison scripture. I look forward to checking out more of your study.
    Blessings Jennifer (Canada)

  3. I’ve been reading through the Bible starting with Gen 1:1 on January 1st with Alexa through Amazon. Anyway, we are now in Jeremiah. Today’s reading was from Jeremiah 25:15 through the beginning of chapter 26. I wasn’t sure but felt it was about a time in the future but wasn’t sure if it was end time prophecy. So I did a word search and your post was the first article on the list that came up. You were able to prove what I had thought but wasn’t sure and you laid it out perfectly. I loved your use of the tables to show how the verses coincided with other prophets concerning end time prophecy. I don’t know if you’ve considered this but have you thought about putting your knowledge of business and your love of prophecy together and make lecturing on the topic a vocation? or at the least, a calling? From just what I read here, I think you would probably be quite a success. Of course if you added some Biblical college courses to your resume you would have more opportunity to talk to Christian groups in your area and possibly around the country. As you may be able to tell, I was really impressed with this article. Thanks for posting it

    • Thanks for the kind words! I’m very close to finishing a comprehensive book about the end times that I’ve been working on for a long time. Perhaps opportunities for me to speak about prophecy will come after the book’s release. I don’t know where the Lord is going to lead me (I don’t even know what I’m having for dinner tomorrow! lol). But if the Lord leads me to speak then I will try my best. Thanks again Stephanie.

  4. Wayne. Your study method is very much like mine. You can use this method to prove many things. The harlot in Revelation 17 and 18 can be known using this method. This would shed even more light on your study of Jeremiah 25. Use key words and word phrases that match with both Revelation and the phrophets when looking for this city, “that great city” that will drink a “double” mixture of Gods wrath and has a “harlots forehead”. You are correct that the latter part of Jeremiah is yet future.

  5. Great article, very clear. I would add Isaiah 66:24 to the last verse in comparison to Jer 25:33 about the dead rotting on the earth.

    Blessings!

  6. When your fear cometh as desolation and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you, then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me.” – {2SG 86.3}
    The unbelieving world will soon have something to think of beside their dress and appearance; and as their minds are torn from these things by distress and perplexity, they have nothing to turn to. They are not prisoners of hope, and therefore do not turn to the Stronghold. Their hearts will fail them for repining and fear. They have not made God their refuge, and he will not be their consolation then, but will laugh at their calamity, and mock when their fear cometh. They have despised and trampled upon the truths of God’s word. They have indulged in extravagant dress, and have spent their lives in hilarity and glee. They have sown to the wind, they must reap the whirlwind. – {RH April 25, 1871 Par. 1}

  7. Thanks! Your article isvery very informative! The table form is spot on. It makes the reading of Scripture-the related verses so much easier to follow. I ve been reading your posts but were not able to comment. Please keep it up!
